Battle of Trafalgar. WM Medal (48mm, 41.98 g, 12h). Soho (Birmingham) mint. By C.H. Küchler. Dated 21 October 1805. Presented to Thomas Billincole, sailor on the Royal Sovereign. HORATIO VISCOUNT NELSON . K · B · DUKE OF BRONTE · &, uniformed bust left / ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY, view of the battle; in exergue, TRAFALGAR/ OCTR 21 1805. Engraved in field: ThoS Billingcole/ Royal Sovereign. Edge: TO THE HEROES OF TRAFALGAR FROM M BOULTON. Hardy 40; BHM 584; Eimer 960. Holed, significant marks and knocks. VF. A rare and historically important relic of the Battle of Trafalgar.

From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection.

White metal strikes of this piece were presented by Boulton to enlisted men who fought at Trafalgar. Some of the recipients were apparently upset by the cheap metal and threw theirs overboard, though clearly this was not the case for the present example. (Hardy p. 26). The reverse engraving indicates this medal was presented to one Thomas Billingcole, who served on the Royal Sovereign. The ship’s paybook indicates that Billingcole (there spelled Billincole) served as an ordinary seaman and was born in about 1780, in Cornwall. He died in June 1848.
