From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection.

The idea to erect Nelson’s Column was conceived in February of 1838 when peers, members of parliament, and other members of the upper class decided that they would raise a monument to Nelson and fund it through public subscription. In order to determine the design that would be used for the monument the organizers arranged for a contest to be held with the winner’s design being used for the monument. The winning entry, chosen by the Duke of Wellington, was designed by William Railton and featured a Corinthian column flanked by four lions with a statue of Nelson standing atop. The Corinthian capital was made from cannons salvaged from the wreck of the HMS Royal George. Despite initial enthusiasm for the project, the public subscription failed to raise enough funds for the project and the British government was had to step in to complete it. The project was not fully completed until the four lions included in the original design were eventually added in 1867, almost thirty years after the beginning of the project.
