‘René I of Anjou is memorable for having introduced on his coins the cross of Anjou with two cross-arms, already seen on coins of the house of Anjou in Hungary, which was to become better known to later generations as the cross of Lorraine as a result of having been adopted by the League during the French Wars of Religion.’ Grierson, p. 199.
