(quadrate C)/X down left field, I(quadrate C)/NI/RI/C down right, crowned bust right / + RTI(retrogradeS)b V(retrograde C) (retrograde Z)O, small cross pattée; annulet in first quarter, triple pellets in second and third quarters, wedge in fourth quarter. The varied German coin types of the eleventh century were often poorly struck though those of Bavarian mints were generally of superior workmanship. The issues with profile or facing busts of the kings are ‘the most impressive.... though how far these were portraits is not clear.’ Grierson, p. 67.
