CANADA, Blacksmith tokens – “Ships, Colonies & Commerce” types. CU Token (26mm, 3.46 g, 5h). Mint in Lower Canada (Montreal?). Struck circa 1835. Ship under sail right, with drooping British flag at stern / SHIPS/ COLONIES/ &/ COMMERCE, small diagnostic oblong die flaw to upper right. Lees 4; Breton 997; Faulkner, Imperial p. 146-149; Charlton BL-24B; cf. Doug Robins Collection (Heritage 3064, 20 April 2018), lot 29221 (NGC XF-40, hammer $2600). Brown surfaces, a few marks and minor flan flaws. Fine. Faulkner calls this “a genuinely rare variety in the series”. |
