Barcelona mint. + IACOBVS DЄI GRACIA RЄX, crowned and mantled bust left; annulets on mantle / CI : VI TAS B IRCA nOnA (double annulet stop), cross pattée with annulets and triple pellets in alternating quarters. Peter II introduced the croat and half-croat at Barcelona shortly before his death in 1285. These large coins of good silver and worth 12d were ‘continued essentially unchanged, over the next two centuries, and formed one of the most important currencies in the western Mediterranean.’ Grierson, p. 138.
