Roman imperial coins depicting sailing ships and galleys usually refer to imperial travels, and this one is no exception. The entire Severan family journeyed to Egypt and Africa over the course of AD 201-202, when this coin was struck, to show off the imperial dynasty to the populace and cement the regime’s grip on power.
