From the Richard A. Jourdan Collection of Medieval European Coins, purchased from Andy Singer, 2000.

‘Edward’s huge war expenses during the late 1330s and throughout the 1340s had denuded the realm of precious metal, but in the following two decades he was able to draw profit from his great victories at Crecy in 1346 and Poitiers in 1356. John the Good’s ransom... together with the ransoms of David II of Scotland... and that of the duke of Burgundy... were equivalent of three times the annual revenue of the Crown. The ransoms of other distinguished French captives, although paid to private persons, likewise added to the bullion stocks of the country. It is not therefore surprising that mint output over the years 1347-62 was very large indeed.’ Grierson, pp.156-157.
