PLANTAGENET. Edward III. 1327-1377. AR Groat (28mm, 4.42 g, 5h). Fourth coinage. Pre-treaty period, series C. London (Tower) mint; im: cross 1. Struck 1351-1352. Crowned facing bust, within tressure of arches; lis at cusps / Long cross pattée; triple pellets in quarters. Grierson, Coins of Medieval Europe 353; Lawrence –; North 1147; SCBC 1565. Toned. VF. Well struck on a broad flan.

From the Richard A. Jourdan Collection of Medieval European Coins, purchased from Andy Singer, 2001.

In 1351 ‘a groat and half-groat, of 4d and 2d respectively, were added permanently to the pattern of denominations. The reverse of the groat did not differ greatly from that of 1279, though the lettering was smaller and the ends of the cross undecorated, but it was in fact a direct copy of a type of groat struck by several princes in the Low Countires at Namur, Antwerp and Brussels between 1337 and 1345.’ Grierson, p.156.
