As at Bourges, Charles the Bald minted a coin type at Nevers with CARLVS REX which was subsequently replaced by a type of a similar style and reverse design, but the imperial title. This coinage apparently went on being minted uninterrupted until the reign of Charles the Fat in the 880s. The style is identical to that of the coins of Bourges, suggesting that the dies for the two types were manufactured in the same workshop. This is by no means implausible, as the two towns are less than 40 m (60 km) apart. Coins from Nevers are however significantly less numerous than those from Bourges. [S. Coupland]
