Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. AR Denarius (18.5mm, 3.74 g, 7h). Lugdunum (Lyon) mint. 2nd emission, 10 BC. Laureate head left / Apollo Citharoedus standing right, holding lyre and plectrum; [ACT] in exergue. RIC I 193b; Lyon 62; RSC 163a . Toned with areas of iridescence, a few minor scratches, a couple of minor deposits. VF.

From the Conti Collection.

Following Augustus and Agrippa’s critical victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra at Actium, Augustus fulfilled his vow to build and dedicate a temple to Apollo should he emerge victorious. He built the temple within his property on the Palatine hill on a location that had been struck by lightning and was thus considered to be desired by the god. He additionally made the site public property. This coin venerates Augustus’ construction of his temple to Apollo, which at the time was only the second in Rome to be dedicated to the god.
