Elagabalus. AD 218-222. Base metal Denarius (18mm, 2.71 g, 11h). Imitating an eastern mint issue of AD 218-219. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Slow quadriga right, bearing the sacred Stone of Emesa on which is an eagle, surrounded by four parasols. Cf. RIC IV 195; cf. Thirion 360; cf. RSC 268a. Dark green-brown patina. VF.

Base metal forgeries of denarii were produced in considerable quantities in the Severan period. This interesting type records the transportation of the sacred stone of the Emesan sun god El-Gabal from Emesa to Rome.
