Ex Morton & Eden 52 (29 November 2011), lot 1013.

This appears to be the earliest known gold dinar issued by the Arab Amirs of Crete, and was evidently overstruck on a Byzantine solidus of Theophilus (AD 829-842). The undertype is largely obscured, but the legend *ΘΕΟ is clearly visible on the obverse at 2 o’clock.
