The epithet “Classicae” means “of the fleet,” so perhaps the men of this unit were expected to serve as marines in the coming battle against Octavian. If so, they never got the chance to fight in this role, for they remained ashore during the naval battle of Actium, after which the legion surrendered to Octavian and was disbanded by him in 31 BC.
