THRACE, Perinthus. Nero. AD 54-68. Æ As (27mm, 11.26 g, 12h). Struck AD 64-66/8. Laureate head right; c/m: ΓAΛ KAI in rectangular incuse / Altar. RPC I 1761a. For c/m: Howgego 527. Red-brown surfaces, porosity. Coin: Fine, c/m: Near VF. Very rare, only two known to RPC, two more in CoinArchives.

A rare type to begin with, this As has a countermark applied by troops in support of Galba. In each of the few known examples, this countermark was applied directly over the head of Nero in an obvious attempt to obliterate his portrait.

Closing Date and Time: 15 March 2023 at 11:34:40 ET.
