Constantine I. AD 307/310-337. Follis (20mm, 2.90 g, 12h). Rome mint, 1st officina. Struck AD 329-330. Rosette-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right / VOT/ XXX in two lines within laurel wreath; RFP. RIC VII 322. Even olive patina, area of doubling on reverse, short hairline flan crack. EF. Remarkably refined portrait.

From the Style Collection.

Portraiture of Constantine I the Great shows a marked move back toward realism after the heavily stylized portraits (in all mediums) popular during the Tetrarchic era. His portrait style consciously imitates that of Trajan two centuries before, indicating Roman emperors were familiar with the coinage of their predecessors.

“Constantine’s portraits tend to be rather lifeless. Not with this coin.” (From the consignor)
