IONIA, Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Circa 225-200 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28.5mm, 16.86 g, 12h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; two monograms in left field, [maeander pattern in exergue]. Vădan Group 2, dies 22/– (unlisted rev. die with second monogram in left field); Price 2043 corr. var. (second monogram is below throne [as Mektepini 384], but this example it is in the left field). Find patina, cleaning scratches. VF. Very rare with second monogram in the left field.

From the Don T. Hayes Collection.

This lot represents an instance where Price erroneously recorded the position of the monograms (based on the reference he cites), but it turns out that his error actually recorded a variety that was yet unknown. In fact, Vădan’s die study (publ. 2018) also did not record a single example of this variety.

Closing Date and Time: 14 June 2023 at 10:39:00 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
