Phoenician Æ Weight. Circa 6th century BC. Trapezoidal Shekel Weight (16x14x12mm, 21.67 g). Phoenician letter “S”-
samesh inscribed on base. Cf. Münz Zentrum XXXII, 55 and 57 for similar weights. Fine, red-brown patina.
From the Garth R. Drewry Collection; ex Malter XXXIX (2 April 1989), lot 9.Interesting error on this weight: the letter should be the Phoenician “Sh”- shin, for shekel. Instead it has “S”- samesh for stater, the half denomination. See the Münz Zentrum lots for the correct markings. An honest mistake, or an attempt at deception?
