Islamic Glass Vessel Stamp. Umayyads. al-Qasim bin ‘Ubayd Allah, Finance Director in Egypt AD 734-742. 40mm (19.70 g). Dated AH 122 (AD 740/1). Nine line legend: “In the Name of Allah. God ordered honesty, and ordered the manufacture of one quarter [qist], al-Qasim bin ‘Ubayd Allah. At the hands of Zaffar bin Shaba. Year two and twenty and one hundred.” Balog 199. Bright green glass, a little rub on the high points.
These weights were attached to glass vessels of a standard measure, to verify the amount of goods traded in the marketplace. The qist was a unit of weight of about 1086 grams.
