159, Lot: 183. Estimate $100.
Sold for $60. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

JUDAEA, Gaza. Marcus Aurelius. AD 161-180. Æ 19mm (6.91 g). Dated CY 229 (AD 168/9). Laureate and draped bust right / GAZA, Apollo standing left, holding patera over altar and holding branch; QKC (date) left, Marnas symbol in upper left field. SNG ANS 932 corr. Near VF, dusty green patina.

From the Garth R. Drewry Collection. Ex Coin Galleries (6 November 1996), lot 282. ANS gives the date as CY 239, but 229 fits better with the rest of Aurelius’ coinage from Gaza. The “K” is badly formed, and could be mistaken for “L”.
