Sold for $450. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

CAPPADOCIA, Caesarea. Trajan. AD 98-117. AR Tridrachm (24mm, 10.28 g). Dated Cos. 6 (AD 112-114). Laureate and draped bust right, seen from behind / Aquila between two signa. Metcalf, Tell 10; Sydenham, Caesarea 226. VF, nice portrait of Trajan.

W. Metcalf, on the basis of hoard evidence, rejects the traditional attribution of this coin type to Caesarea in Cappadocia. He suggests the mint of Bostra in Arabia. However, Ari Kindler in his monograph on the coinage of Bostra sees no evidence for it being from Arabia. The piece remains in limbo.
