The host coin of this interesting countermarked issue was struck by Charles V after the death of his father, Philip, Duke of Burgundy. From his father and grandfather, Charles inherited Burgundy and the Austrian lands, and from his mother he received Spain. Despite the competition from French King Francis I, who vied for control of the Holy Roman Empire, Charles was elected Emperor in 1519. Later, in 1521, Charles annexed Tournai, adding it to his vast holdings.
