Abdera was founded in 544 BC by settlers from Teos fleeing the Persian occupation of Ionia. The colonists naturally continued to use the griffin, symbol of their lost mother city, as the badge of their new home with one small change; on the coinage of Teos the griffin faces right, but the Abderan griffin faces left.
