GAUL, Massalia. Circa 49 BC- 1st century AD. Æ 12mm (1.68 g).
MAS, turreted head of Tyche right /
MAS, caduceus. Depeyrot,
Marseille 75/12 corr.; de la Tour 2051; SNG Copenhagen 853. Good VF, dark brown patina.
From the J. S. Wagner Collection.
Depeyrot lists the BN and Copenhagen pieces under his Type 75, with helmeted head of Minerva / Caduceus, even thought the illustrations clearly show a bust of Tyche. This coin is much better preserved than either of those two specimens, and allows an undisputed identification of the type and the full legends.
