Domitian. As Caesar, AD 69-81. Æ Sestertius (33mm, 23.20 g). Rome mint. Struck AD 80-81. Laureate head right / Victory standing left, leaning on cippus, holding cornucopiae and palm. RIC II 161 (Titus) var. (DOMITIANVS); BMCRE 235 (Titus) var. (same). Near VF, brown surfaces, a few scratches.
From the J. S. Wagner Collection.
Other sestertii of Domitian’s cos. VII have both varieties of legend (DOMITIAN and DOMITIANVS), so the fact that this variety has not been noted before is probably just fortuitous.
