Septimius Severus. AD 193-211. Æ Medallion (35mm, 48.68 g). Struck AD 208. L SEPT SEVERVS PIVS AVG IMP XI PART MAX, laureate and cuirassed bust right / [PM TRP XVI], high arched bridge with colonnaded towers at each end, boat in river below, COS III PP in exergue. Cf. the medallion Cohen 522 for reverse type. Fine, dark brown patina under rough green encrustation.
Same reverse type as RIC 786 (As), which copies the Danubian bridge type of Trajan (RIC 569). Possibly the bridge over the Firth of Forth, built for Severus’ British campaigns.
