CALABRIA, Tarentum. Circa 280-228 BC. AR Diobol (0.88 g, 6h). Helmeted head of Athena left, helmet decorated with Skylla / Herakles strangling the Nemean lion; to left, club above the Keryneian Hind(?) leaping left; AP monogram below. Vlasto 1468 (this coin); cf. HN Italy 1061. Good VF, toned. Extremely rare issue with the Keryneian Hind.
From the James E. Cain Collection. Ex M.P. Vlasto Collection.
All of the references to this type ignore the leaping animal to the lower left of Herakles. As all of the iconography on the reverses of these issues are references to Herakleian myths, this animal must represent the Keryneian Hind. It is unknown why such a reference would have been added to this type.
