MACEDON, Aphytis. Circa 187-179 BC. Æ 20mm (8.71 g, 8h). Struck under Philip V. Head of Zeus Ammon right / Eagle standing right. AMNG 14; SNG ANS 222; BMC 4; Weber 1919 (this coin). Good VF, dark brown patina.
From the Christopher Morcom Collection. Ex Edward P. Warren Collection; Sir Hermann Weber Collection, 1919 (purchased from Jean P. Lambros, 1883).
Although large portions of Edward Warren’s collection were sold in the first decade of the 1900s, through a Sotheby sale in 1905 (“Well-Known Amateur,” 2 May) and to the Boston Museum in 1904, Warren continued to collect and sell coins up to the time of his death in 1928 (as noted by M.B. Comstock and C.C. Vermule in the introduction to the reprint of the Boston collection). This particular coin was apparently purchased by Warren in the 1920s from the Weber collection, where it had resided since the latter acquired it from J.P. Lambros in 1883.
