COLOMBIA, Colonial. Fernando VII. King of Spain, 1808-1833. AR 2 Reales (5.74 g, 12h). Pasto mint. Dated 1822 O. Laureate and draped bust right / Crowned coat of arms flanked by pillars. ME 15593; KM 74. VF, toned.

Traditionally attributed to the Popayán mint due to the presence of a P mintmark, this 1822 issue is now given to Pasto, a town in modern-day Ecuador. In the early 1820s, while the independence movement was gaining popularity in Colombia, Pasto remained a supporter of the royalists, hence the depiction of the Spanish king on this coin. This type is rarely encountered in such nice condition.
