Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / The emperor, holding sceptre, standing in quadriga and being hailed by Alexandria; date below. Köln 1037; Milne 1314; Emmett 966. VF, brown and green patina, some encrustation.


An extensive series of silver and bronze issues marks Hadrian’s triumphant tour of Egypt in AD 130. The trip was marred by the tragic and mysterious death of Hadrian’s young companion Antinous on their boat trip up the Nile.
