Italian Renaissance medal in the Roman Style. 16th century. AR 23mm (5.49 g). DIVI IVLI, wreathed head of Julius Caesar right; lituus behind / MAR VIC, seated emperor facing right, holding cornucopiae and receiving Victory from Mars standing on cippus. Attwood -. VF, chased surfaces, mount crudely removed from top.

The work somewhat resembles the small medals created by Valerio Belli (1468-1546); cf. Attwood p. 205-224. His medals portrayed famous men of antiquity in an antique style, but he apparently only made one set of medals for the Twelve Caesars, and no other types for the emperors. This is most likely a contemporary piece in a similar classicising style by an anonymous compatriot.
