Michael II the Amorian, with Theophilus. 820-829. Æ Follis (32mm, 7.03 g). Constantinople mint. Struck 821-829. Crowned facing busts of Michael, wearing chlamys and Theophilus, wearing loros / Large M; cross above, XXX to right, NNN to left, Q below. DOC III 9; SB 1642. Near VF, brown patina, a bit rough.

From the Chris Connell Collection.

Michael II revived the large flan follis, but the meaning of the type had been lost; the date formula had become a meaningless code, and the office number became a standard Q, whose meaning is unknown.
