Good VF, with a contemporary Indian mount, a heavy loop with granulated decoration.

This lot, with its clear Indian-style mount, reflects the extensive ongoing Pacific trade between the European colonies in America and those in the East. Gold and silver from American mines was shipped to Asia for the purchase of rare and exotic commodities, spices, silks, porcelain and the like, intended for the European home market. Portuguese presence in India dated from 1498, when Vasco de Gama initiated a treaty with the Zamorin of Calicut and established a small trading post. Alfonso de Albuquerque conquered Goa in 1510, and that city became the capital of Portuguese India, which eventually comprised a network of trading posts and forts along both coasts. The last Portuguese colonies in India, the enclaves of Goa and Daman-Diu, were annexed in 1961.
