ANGLO-SAXON, Continental Sceats. Circa 700-765. AR Sceat (1.28 g, 2h). Series E, ‘Hallum’ phase, ‘miscellaneous’ variety. Mint in Frisia (Dorestad). ‘Porcupine’ left, OIII and cross within / Standard with central annulet and two chevrons around; cross above, three lines at sides, symbols in corners. Cf. Abramson E105; OdV&K 652; cf. Metcalf p. 231; cf. Beowulf 37; cf. North 48; cf. SCBC 788. EF, toned. Excellent metal. Extremely rare, possibly the second known.


The variety in the Domburg hoard (OdV&K) is apparently the sole published example of this type, and may be from the same obverse die.
