NORMAN. William I 'the Conqueror'. 1066-1087. AR Penny (1.10 g, 12h). Two scepters type (BMC IV). Sandwich mint; Ælfheh, moneyer. Struck circa 1072-1074. +PILLEMV REX ΛNI, crowned facing bust; scepter pattée to left, scepter botonné to right / +ÆLFEEH ON SΛN, cross fleury with annulet in center over saltire botonné. SCBI -; BMC -; North 844; SCBC 1253. Good VF, toned, insignificant flan flaw on reverse. Extremely rare, possibly unique.


Sandwich is a very rare mint overall, but none of this moneyer-type combination is present in any of the major public and private collections (including Conte, Elmore Jones, Lockett, Mack, Parsons, and Ryan), nor the EMC database.
