SICILY, Herbessos. 334-330 BC. Æ Dilitron (29mm, 20.10 g, 9h). [HEPBEΣΣIN]ΩN, head of Kore right, wearing laurel wreath / Eagle standing right, head left; serpent to left. Castrizio series IV, 1, 1 (D1/R1); CNS 6; Rizzo pl. LIX, 17; Basel -; Morcom -; SNG ANS -; SNG Lloyd -; Lafaille -. Near EF, dark green patina. Overstruck on a Syracusan drachm of Dionysios I (cf. CNS 80). Very rare, and among the finest known.
Very little is known about Herbessos. Practically all of her coinage dates from the time of Timoleon of Syracuse, with whom Herbessos was allied.
