KINGS of ELYMAIS. Kamnaskires IV. Circa 63/2-54/3 BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 4.07 g). Travelling (Court) mint. Dated SE 259 (54/3 BC). Diademed and draped bust left / Belos–Zeus Nikephoros seat left; monogram to inner left; ΘNΣ (date) in exergue. Van’t Haaff Type 8.3.2-3.a (this coin, illustrated); Alram -. VF, lightly toned. Extremely rare, the only example with this date.

This coin is from the last dated issue of Kamnaskires IV, and is the only example that displays the date (the other example, from the Bellaria Collection [CNG E-Auction 122, lot 165], is an obverse die duplicate, but the date is off the flan). The first dated issue of his successor, only known on a tetradrachm, is from the same year. Therefore, this coin is the sole historical reference for establishing the final date of Kamnaskires IV’s reign (no other epigraphic or literary evidence exists).
