SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. Æ Hemilitron (5.33 g). Obverse die signed by the artist E(uainetos)(?). Struck circa 410-405 BC. Head of Arethusa left, hair in sphendone; E behind / Star of eight rays within incuse circle in center of quadripartite incuse square. CNS 16; Favorito type 74 (c. 425-420 BC); SNG ANS 398-402; E. Favorito, “The Signed Bronzes of Syracuse,” The Celator 10, 7 (July 1996), fig. 1 (this coin). Near VF, dark green-brown patina.

The meaning of the E on the obverse of this type has been the subject of much debate, and is most likely an artist’s signature (Euainetos?).
