MACEDON (Roman Protectorate), Republican period. First Meris. Circa 167-149 BC. AR Tetradrachm (16.25 g, 4h). Amphipolis mint. Diademed and draped bust of Artemis right, bow and quiver over shoulder, in the center of a Macedonian shield / Club; monogram above and below; all within oak wreath, thunderbolt to left. Prokopov - (unlisted dies); AMNG III/1, 164; SNG Copenhagen -; SNG Ashmolean 3293. EF, area of minor roughness and slight die shift on obverse, die break on reverse.
This monogram pairing appeared fairly early in the series, and the dies recorded by Prokopov display a relatively fine style. The style of the present coin, however, is significantly different, suggesting it is a local or Celtic imitation.
