INDIA, Colonial. British India. Madras Presidency. AR Double Fanam (1.81 g, 12h). Third issue. Fort St. George mint. Struck 1764-1807. Small deity (Vishnu) standing facing / Interlocked C’s. Pridmore 18; KM 293. VF, toned.

The British East India Company entered India around 1600, initially establishing trade at Surat, then expanding closer to the Malaccan Straits near which the construction of a fort was begun. The fort was completed on April 23rd, St George’s Day, and the name was used in honor of the fort’s completion.
