Trajan. AD 98-117. Æ Sestertius (32mm, 27.34 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck circa AD 112-115. Laureate and draped bust right / The Via Traiana reclining left on rock outcropping, head right, holding wheel; VIA TRAIANA in exergue. RIC II 637. VF, some scratches.

The Via Traiana was an important Roman road that ran from Beneventum to Brundisium, a center of maritime trade and gateway to the East. Its construction was begun in 109 and completed in 113 at Trajan’s own expense. The road was commemorated not only with coin types, but also with Trajan's impressive arch at Beneventum.
