Extremely Rare Architectural Type Unknown for Julia Maesa

PHOENICIA, Sidon. Julia Maesa. Augusta, AD 218-224/5. Æ Trichalkon (17.47 g, 6h). Draped bust right / Octastyle temple façade with large central bay and roof line decorated with statues set on two large columns, or towers; in bay, statue of Europa on bull right; in open area below, statue of Silenus being crowned by two Nikai, each standing on cippus. Cf. Rouvier 1550 (Elagabalus; same rev. die as illustrated coin); AUB -; SNG Copenhagen -; BMC - . VF, green patina, light deposits. Extremely rare reverse type and apparently unpublished for Julia Maesa.


Rouvier cites only two examples of this reverse type, both of which were of Elagabalus and in his collection.
