MESOPOTAMIA, Uncertain. 2nd-1st century BC. Æ 18mm (6.71 g, 12h). Radiate head of sun god Shamash right / Man on camel right; all within wreath. Cf. Slocum p. 46 and pl. 7, C. VF, dark brown patina, earthen deposits. Rare.
From the J.S. Wagner Collection.
According to Henri Seyrig, who published a large hoard from Nisibis, this type is perhaps of Hatraean origin. Cf. H. Seyrig, “Trésor monetaire de Nisibe,” RN, 5th ser. vol. 17 (1955), p. 89, 13-14; with discussion pp. 107-8 and Slocum, “Coins of Hatra,” MN, vol. 22 (1977), pp. 37-47. Only three examples of the camel with rider were found in the hoard.
