SYRIA, Coele-Syria. Damaskos. Pseudo-autonomous issue struck under Cleopatra VII of Egypt(?), circa 37-32 BC. Æ 20mm (7.28 g, 12h). Dated SE 276 (37/36 BC). Head of Tyche right / Nike advancing right, holding wreath and palm; all within wreath. SNG München 1007; RPC I 4782; SNG Copenhagen -; BMC -. Near VF, dark green and black patina.
Coins of Damaskos dated to the Seleukid years 276 and 280 feature the portrait of Cleopatra on the obverse. While there is no literary evidence to support the claim that the city was under the control of the queen and the use of local dating suggests a degree of autonomy, the authors of Roman Provincial Coins believe it likely that Damaskos, a weak power at this time, belonged to Cleopatra.
