PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy I Soter. 305-282 BC. AR Drachm (14mm, 3.30 g, 12h). Alexandreia mint. Struck circa 294-285 BC. Diademed head right, wearing aegis / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt; [Φ above A in left field]. Svoronos 372; SNG Copenhagen 67. Fine, light scratches in field on reverse. Extremely rare denomination for Ptolemy I.

Ex Classical Numismatic Group 51 (15 September 1999), lot 600.

There are apparently no issue markings on the reverse of this coin. Although it could be an issue of Ptolemy II, all of his known issues have field markings. Also, an inspection of the style of the illustrated drachms of both Ptolemies in Svoronos (364, 372, 570) and Copenhagen (67 and 111), suggest the present coin is of Ptolemy I.
