Marius. Romano-Gallic Emperor, AD 269. Antoninianus (21mm, 3.68 g, 6h). Colonia Agrippina (Cologne) mint. 1st emission. Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm. RIC V 18; Gilljam 23 (V VI/ R 39); Mairat 239-40; AGK 7b; Cunetio 2507. VF, brown patina. Rare issue, struck with reverse die of Laelianus. Struck from the same obverse die as the previous lot.
From the Gordon S. Parry Collection.
The first issue of Marius' coinage at Colonia Agrippina is arguably his earliest, as its reverse dies were originally used under Laelianus (see Gilljam). As such, many of these coins exhibit a high degree of die wear on their reverse, like this and the previous lot.
