ISLANDS off CARIA, Rhodos. Rhodes. Circa 125-88 BC. AR Hemidrachm (14mm, 1.52 g, 12h). ‘Plinthophoric’ coinage. Diognetos, magistrate. Radiate head of Helios facing slightly right / Rose with bud to left; ΔIOΓNHTOΣ above, Nike to right; all within incuse square. Jenkins,
Rhodian, Group D, 149; SNG Keckman -; SNG Copenhagen -. VF, toned, light porosity.
From the D. Alighieri Collection.
It is interesting to note on many (if not most) examples of this magistrate’s coins, both drachms and hemidrachms, that the name above the rose runs all of the way out of the incuse square and into the edge area of the flan.
