SICILY, Syracuse. Dionysios I. 405-367 BC. AR Dekadrachm (43.29 g, 5h). Unsigned dies in the style of Euainetos. Struck circa 405-400 BC. Charioteer, holding kentron in right hand and reins in left, driving fast quadriga left; above, Nike flying right, crowning charioteer with wreath; below heavy exergual line, [a military harness], shield, greaves, cuirass, and Attic helmet, all connected by a horizontal spear / Head of Arethusa left, wearing grain-ear wreath, triple-pendant earring, and necklace; below chin, griffin head right; four dolphins around. Gallatin dies R.XIX/G.Ia; SNG ANS -; BMC 187 (same dies); Dewing 921 (same dies). Good VF, lightly toned, usual minor die breaks and die rust in hair. Nice metal quality. Rare issue with griffin head.
