KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (4.24 g, 1h). Uncertain Macedonian mint. Lifetime issue, circa 325-323 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / AΛEΞAN-ΔPOY, eagle standing right, head left, on thunderbolt; monogram to right. Price 153 (’Amphipolis’); ADM I 28-31 (Miletos); SNG München -; SNG Alpha Bank -; SNG Saroglos -; SNG Ashmolean 2517; SNG Berry 250. Good VF, a few light marks. Very rare.

Based on the monogram and possibly an obverse die link, M. Thompson (ADM) placed this issue of the eagle coinage at Miletos. Price, however, thought it difficult to place any of the eagle coinage outside Macedonia, let alone a mint that was not the earliest in western Asia Minor. While placement at a Macedonian mint is most probable, H. Troxell discounted the possibility that this particular issue belongs with the rest of the eagle drachms at the primary Macedonian mint (Troxell, Studies, p. 40).
