Michael VIII Palaeologus. 1261-1282. Æ Trachy (3.57 g, 6h). Class XIII. Thessalonica mint. Γ/OA/ΔI down left field, (TP)/I/O/C down right, nimbate, half-length facing bust of St. Demetrios, in military outfit, holding sword and shield / MXAV ΔЄ CΠOTIC, Michael, wearing loros, standing facing, holding patriarchal cross set on globus in right hand and labarum in left; to left, eight-rayed star. Cf. DOC 169-70 (attributes reversed, no star in field); cf. PCPC 76; cf. SB 2303. VF, dark green patina, area of double strike on reverse. Very rare variety.
